Khabarovsk is the administrative center of Khabarovsk region and one of the largest cities in the Russian Far East. It is also the last major stop on the famous Siberian railroad before Vladivostok.
The first settlement of Russian people have arisen at the Okhotsk coast in the first half of 17th century. Khabarovsk was founded in 1858 as a military post Khabarovka for defence of the Russian border with China. In 1880 it received city status and from 1893 it's called Khabarov. It was named after a Russian explorer Yerofey Khabarov. Now his monument (a big bronze figure) stands in the Railway Station Square.
The city is stretched on 50 kilometers along the mighty Amur River, one of the largest in Russia and ranking ninth according to its length and high water level.
Now Khavarovsk is the modern city with picturesque boulevards, spacious streets and green parks. It is a good city for strolling. Walk along the Amur River, visit the museums.

The Local Lore Museum

It was founded in 1894 and was named in honour of the governor-general of the Priamursky Territory Grodekov, the explorer and the active creator of the museum reserves.
It displays impressive collections on geology, flora and fauna. Also you may know the history and culture of the indigenous population (Nanai, Evenki and others) and about life of the first Russian settlements of the 16th century.
