Listvyanka is located to the southwest of Lake Baikal (about 70km from Irkutsk) It is the tourist wise village of Listvyanka offer a charming village atmosphere and striking views of wooden houses beside lake Baikal.
Listvyanka got its name because of larches, growing on the nearest Larch cape.
Listvyanka is mentioned for the first time in the notes of traveler I. G. Georgi (1772-1773), on that period, there was only Nikola settlement dweller Roman Kislitsyn winter hut, built approximately in 1725. New post station had been built soon. After building Irkutskaya Hydra Power Station coast area was flooded, as the result, original two-row building up of main street became one-row one. Houses are turned by their front sides to the lake. Erected of logs houses without plank siding of outer walls are characteristic of old buildings of Listvyanka.
Nikolskaya church is situated 500 meters from Baikal Lake in Krestovskaya Pad (Listvyanka settlement). Public worship is carried out there. In late fifties the church building was restored and replenished with icons from other Irkutsk cathedrals. There are memorials of the middle of 18th century among these icons. The story of building the church is rather interesting. According to the legend, in early 19th century Russian merchant Xenofont Serebryakov during his traveling along the lake was to distress, but he did not despair and prayed to saint Nicolas - all sailors protector. The wonder had happened: Xenofont saw Saint Nicolas, who harried to help him. To express his gratitude to Saint Nicolas, who saved his life, Serebryakov promised to build up a cathedral in honor of Saint Nicolas.
Building of cathedral started in 1846 in Nicola settlement on the bank of Angara and was finished by his wife Natalya after his death. The church was replaced twice. For the first time it was replaced to the bank of Baikal Lake and for the second time - inside the bank of the lake in connection with Irkutsk Hydra Power Station construction in 1957 and followed water level raise.
Not far from Listvyanka, almost in centre of Angara you can see Shaman-stone. According to the legend, Baikal-father threw a stone behind his daughter Angara who ran away to handsome Yenisey. So that stone is on that place. The Shaman-stone received its name due to Shamans of Buryatia, who used it as the place for carrying out their ceremonies. For example, shamans bounded a person suspected in crime for a night, if a person was alive on morning he was considered innocent.
The first exposition of Baikal museum was founded in 1928. Now people can see fish inhabiting the lake Baikal, stuffed birds and animals, examples of down sediments and Baikal minerals, different exhibits found during scientific expeditions in this museum. Moreover the aquarium where Baikal seals live was opened last year.
Listvyanka is comparatively small settlement (1,5 thousand people live there). It stretched along the lake for five km. In recent years the settlement acquires more likeness with resort area. Brick cottages have been built on the place where wooden huts used to be, multiple cafes and bars have been opened.
There are many tourists there on summer and holidays. There are a lot of fish salesmen on two trade squares: central landing and sight square - opposite Shaman stone. Fish is usually cooked on square. You can find a lot of souvenirs and furnishing from stone for women. The largest enterprise of the settlement in previous years was a shipyard, where a lot of ships of Baikal fleet were made.
