Surrounded by Baikal mountain chain from three sides and Baikal Lake from the forth side, Severobaikals is a good city for outdoor adventure. You can explore bays and islands of Baikal, swim and sail in the summer, ski, skate and ride the ice in winter; make the interesting photo and taste the famous fish - omul.

Severobaikalsk was founded in 1974 as a base settlement of BAM (Baikal-Amur Trunk) workers at a spot called "Novogodniy" (New year). At that time it was just a very small settlement. It represented a group of tents, small wooden huts and railroad cars put on the ground. There were a few heating stations and electricity was produced by mobile power stations. In a few years it would grow into the city with developed social infrastructure. The monument to Leningrad builders of the city stands in Railway station square. Also there is museum of BAM history. In 1980 the city was given a status of the city.

Severobaikalsk is very popular among the tourists.



HOW TO GET



By plane

The closest airport of Nizhneangarsk (25 km from Severobaikalsk) provides flights to Ulan-Ude (1hour 20 minutes) and to Irkutsk (1 hour 30 minutes)


By ferry

With beginning of navigation seasonon Baikal in June "Kometa" motor ship plies between Severobaikalsk and Irkutsk ports. It covers almost 700 km within 10 hours.


By train

Severobaikals is a major road junction. The Baikal-Amur Trunk connects the city with Moscow and all major cities of Siberia. It takes 92 hours to reach Moscow, 31 hours to reach Krasnoyarsk, 153 hours to reach Khabarovsk.
